Short on time? The PawCloud Orthopedic is our best overall — genuine support-grade foam and a washable, chew-resistant cover. For very large breeds, the GreatDane XXL gives them room to stretch out.

Older and larger dogs put real strain on their joints, and a good orthopedic bed makes a visible difference to how comfortably they rest. The problem is that plenty of beds slap "orthopedic" on a thin slab of shredded foam. We looked for genuine support-grade foam, covers that survive both claws and the washing machine, and grippy bases that don't slide across the floor.

1. Best overall — PawCloud Orthopedic
PawCloud Orthopedic Dog Bed
What we liked
- Solid 4" memory-foam base (not shredded fill)
- Removable cover survives repeated washing
- Chew- and scratch-resistant fabric
- Non-slip bottom stays put
Worth noting
- Firmer than some dogs first expect
- Only two colour options
The PawCloud gets the fundamentals right: a genuine slab of supportive memory foam rather than loose fill, wrapped in a tough cover you can actually wash. It's the bed we'd buy for an ageing large-breed dog without hesitation.
2. Best for XL breeds — GreatDane XXL
GreatDane XXL Orthopedic
What we liked
- Huge surface for full stretch-out
- Thick 5" support foam holds up to heavy dogs
- Reinforced seams
Worth noting
- Takes up a lot of floor space
- Heavy to move around
Big dogs need a bed that won't bottom out under their weight. The GreatDane's thick, dense foam holds its shape for years and gives even the largest breeds room to sprawl.
3. Best value — ComfyRest Foam Bed
ComfyRest Foam Bed
What we liked
- Real memory foam at a budget price
- Machine-washable cover
- Great starter ortho bed
Worth noting
- Thinner foam than premium picks
- Cover less chew-resistant
If you want orthopedic support without the premium price, the ComfyRest delivers. The foam is a touch thinner, but for lighter or younger dogs it's plenty — and easy on the wallet.
How to choose an orthopedic dog bed
Look for solid foam, not fill
True orthopedic support comes from a single slab of memory or support foam at least 3–4 inches thick. Beds stuffed with shredded foam or polyfill flatten quickly and offer little joint relief.
The cover has to be washable — and tough
Dog beds get dirty fast. A removable, machine-washable cover is essential, and a chew-resistant weave will save you money if your dog is a nibbler.
Size up, and check the base
Measure your dog nose-to-tail and add a few inches so they can stretch. A non-slip base keeps the bed from sliding on hard floors when they climb on.
